Owasso's Dorrell brings home conference pole vaulting title

OWASSO — Owasso’s Josh Dorrell won the pole vault and Bobby Hopper took second in the discus, highlighting the host Rams’ performances at the Frontier Conference Track and Field Championships.

Broken Arrow won the boys team title with Owasso finishing fourth.

The Rams also placed sixth in the pole vault and sixth in the 800-meter run to go along with third in the 3,200 relay, fourth in the 1,600 relay and fifth in the 400 relay.

Dorrell cleared 13 feet, 6 inches to win with younger brother Joe finishing sixth at 12-0. Hopper tossed the discus 151-2 for his runnerup position in the event.

“Josh is jumping well, but in his mind he would like to get back to 14-6,’’ said Owasso coach Steve Parker. “He’s been first or second in last three or four meets and he’s been real consistent. He’s been our most consistent male athlete all year and he competes well. When weather or conditions aren’t really favorable, he finds a way to gut it out.’’

Hopper, a nose guard on the Owasso football team, was a surprise No. 2 finisher in the discus. Parker said he finally lived up to his ability and will make a bid for state recognition.

“He’s always practices well, but he had never done it in a meet,’’ Parker said. “He seems to lock up in meets, but it (breaking loose) finally happened today. We thought he could do it and now maybe this will give him the confidence.’’

Geoffrey Sullivan crossed sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:04.80. Turner said Sullivan will battle a host of strong half-mile runners for state qualification when the regional meet takes place in Owasso on Saturday.
