Business Spotlight:

Purr-fect place for cats

OWASSO —

For centuries cats have been affectionate members of American families everywhere, taking up residence in homes all across the country. Now, cats in Owasso finally have a place of their own to get all the attention and care they need.
The Cat Clinic of Owasso, opened in July 2011, is a full service veterinary clinic that specializes in feline care.
If you take your favorite cat into the Cat Clinic of Owasso, they’ll get to meet veterinarian Dr. Sharon Baker and her staff.
“I found that at most veterinary clinics cats were being handled in a very high stress way” said Dr. Baker. “Here we make sure and give the cats low stress handling. We never hold them up by the scruff of the neck, and try to gently bring them in wrapped in a towel.
“You’ll find most cats that come into a vet clinic hissing aren’t mean cats, the majority of them are just scared. Giving them that low stress environment to come into is a big part of what we do.”
That low stress environment includes handling the cats with care before, during, and after they have been treated.
“The post-op window of treatment is one of the most important for all cats,” Baker said. “We always have a nurse that stays with the cat until it is standing up on its own to make sure it comes out of surgery safely.”
Beyond their loving customer service, the Cat Clinic of Owasso also has a great deal of new technology to offer up to anyone that brings their beloved pet in.
“We have a digital dental x-ray and a special Bair Hugger warming unit. One of the biggest problems when operating on a pet can be that they start to get too cold, but this ensures their health by keeping them warm during surgery,” said Baker.
Baker had known she wanted to be a vet since she was a little kid, but had never envisioned starting her own clinic until she was chosen for a Tulsa Community College program designed for people wanting to start their own business.
“I hadn’t planned on being a business owner, but I knew a specialized clinic was needed in Owasso and no one had done it yet” she said.
The Cat Clinic of Owasso will be extending its reach further this summer with a float in the Trail Days parade and Dr. Baker will be visiting grade schools in the fall with the Cat Clinic’s newest mascot.
“The best advice I have for kids is to start volunteering at animal shelters by walking dogs and helping out. At any age, really, volunteering is a great thing to do,” she said.
With its quiet, dog-free atmosphere and loving staff, there’s no reason anyone’s cat won’t feel right at home at the Cat Clinic of Owasso.
